Course Aims
The aim of this course is to give delegates a good overall understanding of today's PC and networking technology.
This course is designed for delegates who have either little or no knowledge of PC systems and networks.

(Split into 2 days PC technology and 3 days Networking)

Course Prerequisites
Delegates attending this course should have an understanding an operating system such as DOS, Windows 98 or Windows 2000.

Course Objectives
After this course delegates will be able to:-

PC basics

Describe and locate the main PC components.
Understand common computer acronyms.
Set-up a PC system’s BIOS
Install extra memory and additional PC cards on windows systems.
Install and set-up SCSI and IDE disk drives and load an operating system.
Tune an operating system and use a registry editor

 Networking basics

Understand the main differences between local and wide area networks.
Describe how Ethernet networks function.
Understand the cabling requirements and specifications for Ethernet networks.
Make up twisted pair cables and be able to check the cables for faults.
List the different Ethernet frame types and understand what each frame type would be used for.
Understand the difference between a repeater, a bridge, a router, a brouter and switch.
Understand what a spanning tree bridge is used for.
Describe the TCP and IP packet formats.
Set-up a TCP/IP router.
Use a Network Analyser to check for faults such as jabbering network cards, duplicate hardware addresses or incorrect packet sizes.
For a given TCP/IP address state it’s class, default network address and host address.
Network troubleshooting
List the most common faults on Ethernet networks.
List the advantages of ISDN Kilo-stream and Mega-stream.
